Choosing the Right Travel School

Whether you are a college graduate who wants to round out a college career with an intensive short-term trade or technical course, or a high school graduate who wants to finish your education without attending a traditional two-or-four-year college, there is a travel school that is right for you.

Remember, first of all, that being a travel agent requires certain skills and knowledge and that attending a school which helps you acquire those skills will make you more marketable. With that in mind, you will need to ask the following questions:

  1. LICENSING - Does the school have a license from the state post-secondary school licensing bureau? If there is not indication of such license in the school's catalog, check with the Department of Education within your state. Almost all states require licensing.
  2. FACULTY - Who teaches on the faculty? How many members of the faculty are working travel agents? How many years of travel agency and travel industry experience do they have?
  3. CURRICULUM - What is the curriculum like? Is it into keeping with the computerized methods used by the travel industry today? What type of computer is used at the travel school, and what are the facilities like?
  4. TEACHING METHODS - What kind of hands-on experience is available? Does the school provide role-playing? Do students work on a live computer system? Is there a working travel agency on campus? Practical experience is one sure way of keeping up with state-of-the-art changes.
  5. REPUTATION - How long has the school been in operation? Does the school have a good relationship with the local travel community? Contact the Better Business Bureau about the school if you have any doubts.
  6. PLACEMENT - Does the school offer placement assistance for graduates? If so, what is their success ratio? Feel free to ask if there are any graduates who are working in the area with whom you can talk.

Also, be sure to visit the school and see for yourself. While the telephone is useful in making your initial inquiries, it is important to drop by the school and check out its facilities. Finally, be sure that the school is affordable for you. And before you sign on the dotted line, find out what their refund policy is.
