Hotel Saint Francis is a
three-story historic inn with 82 guest rooms, just one block southwest of the historic
plaza in the heart of Santa Fe. The Saint Francis is the only Santa Fe hotel listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. An old-time Santa Fean described the original hotel
as a "first-class hotel with a wonderful dining room -- waitresses and bellhops in
uniform...in the lobby were men in top hats and coats and women in full-length dresses.
Hotel guests had to show a marriage license just to get a room with their wives." The
current structure was built in 1923 and underwent a major renovation in 1986. A unique
ambiance is created by the combination of 1920's style and distinctly Southwestern
elements such as clay tile floors and wrought iron chandeliers in the lobby. Other
historic touches include a light fixture that once hung in the orginal State Capitol
Building, another light fixture from an old theater in Chicago, the hotel's switchboard
from the 1930's and an old iron telephone from one of the rooms, now used as a house
phone.
